Business litigator and legal counselor Ted Gehring provides in-depth guidance on compliance with California’s employment laws. He represents employers in a range of industries in their disputes and operational challenges. Ted regularly meets the demands of responding swiftly to HR incidents.

Acting as an on-call troubleshooter, he guides company leaders on how to respond immediately to workplace issues and concerns. Ted also handles matters involving the intersection of employment and business disputes, such as claims involving restrictive covenants, trade secrets and matters in which individuals are employees and shareholders of close corporations.

Ted’s experience ranges from day-to-day human resources issues, operational matters, handbooks and policies to contract reviews, class action and PAGA claims, terminations, discrimination and retaliation claims, internal investigations and complex business litigation. Ted works to identify risks using more than 25 years of experience in California. He works across his clients’ organizations and with their teams.

Candid case evaluation and swift resolutions are hallmarks of his pragmatic style and sound judgment in support of clients’ businesses. Ted’s counsel and strategies reflect decades of resolving lawsuits at trial, arbitration and other settlement forums. He represents clients in state and federal courts and before state and federal agencies involving administrative complaints.

Ted’s early career began with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP after he earned degrees from the University of Texas and University of Michigan law School.

  • Summary Judgment in Employee Shareholder Dispute
    Achieved a complete victory on summary judgment on claims by former employees that their employer had breached fiduciary duties owed to them as shareholders.
  • Arbitration Win on Wage and Hour Claims
    Obtained a complete victory following a three-day arbitration on claims by employee involving retaliation and wage and hour disputes.
  • Summary Adjudication and Trial Win on Multiple Claims
    Won summary adjudication on individual’s claims for retaliation, discrimination and harassment and victory at trial on individual’s wage and hour claims.
  • Independent Contractor Status Upheld
    Defended client in case before the CA Department of Industrial Relations where claimant asserted that she was misclassified as independent contractor. Hearing officer upheld employer’s classification of claimant as independent contractor.
  • CA EDD Misclassification Defense
    Defended client in case before CA Employment Development Department where individual asserted they were misclassified as an independent contractor, and client received favorable determination from the agency.
  • State and Federal Administrative Complaints Dismissed
    Obtained numerous case closures for insufficient evidence with state and federal agencies in matters involving alleged violations of employment laws.
